00:05 Hello everyone and welcome back to Horror Stories. 00:08 I know many of you use these episodes to fall asleep, so before you drift off, I'd love it if you could leave a comment letting me know where you're listening from around the world. 00:17 Also, don't forget to like and subscribe if you're enjoying the episodes. 00:26 Story 1 Before I explain what happened that night in October, I need everyone to understand something about me. 00:34 I am a rational person and I always have been. 00:38 I work as a dental hygienist. I keep my checkbook balanced. I have never believed in conspiracy theories, ghosts, or anything along those lines. But what took place inside my home was real, and the police reports confirm every detail. 00:53 My son Jaime and I had lived in that old farmhouse on Willow Creek Road for approximately eight months. 00:59 It had been only the two of us since my ex-husband moved to Colorado. 01:03 The house was ideal for what I could afford, two stories, peeling white paint covering the wooden siding, and endless cornfields surrounding the property. 01:13 The isolation never bothered me. After enduring years of arguments and shouting, the silence actually felt therapeutic. 01:21 Jaime was six years old and had just begun first grade. He loved having so much open space where he could run around after school. The changes inside the house happened so gradually that I am embarrassed by how long it took me to connect them. 01:34 During the first week of October, I returned from work and discovered that one of the kitchen chairs had been turned completely around so that it faced away from the table. 01:43 It had not merely been pulled out, as Jaime might have done while climbing onto it. Someone had deliberately rotated it. 01:51 I asked Jaime about the chair while preparing spaghetti, but he only shrugged. 01:55 He said he had been at school all day, which was true. 01:58 Mrs. Foster had kept him after school for his reading group until I picked him up at four o'clock. 02:04 Then there was the problem with the basement door. 02:07 I was obsessive about keeping it locked because the staircase was steep and had no railing. 02:12 Yet three times that week I found the door partially open. 02:16 It was never standing wide open, only unlatched and pushed inward by approximately six inches. 02:22 Just enough for me to see the darkness beyond it. 02:25 The bathroom window disturbed me even more. It was a small first floor window that had been painted shut when we moved into the house. 02:33 I had spent an entire Saturday afternoon using a putty knife and WD-40 to pry it open because the bathroom needed ventilation. 02:41 After putting in all that effort, I always made certain it was locked. The latch was difficult to operate. You had to press down firmly while sliding it toward the right. 02:51 But when I arrived home that Friday, the window was open by about four inches. 02:56 The white lace curtain my mother had given me had been pulled halfway through the opening and fluttered in the breeze like something attempting to escape. 03:03 Jaime had spent that afternoon at his friend Tommy's house. I stood in front of the window for what must have been five minutes, trying to remember whether I might have opened it that morning and forgotten. 03:14 Deep down, however, I knew I had not. 03:17 The weather had been cold throughout the week, with frost covering the grass every morning. 03:22 I began doing things I had never done before. 03:25 I checked every lock twice before going to bed. 03:28 I walked through every room using the flashlight on my phone, even though all the lights worked perfectly. 03:35 I placed Jaime's baseball bat beside my nightstand. I even called Mr. Garrett, who lived down the road, and asked if he had noticed anyone near my property. 03:44 He said he had not, but then mentioned something that caused my chest to tighten. 03:49 Two weeks earlier, he had seen a battered green pickup truck parked at the end of my driveway around noon. 03:55 It had remained there for approximately 20 minutes before driving away. 03:59 Mr. Garrett assumed it was someone who had gotten lost and stopped to check directions on a phone. 04:05 The problem was that I had seen the same truck or one that looked exactly like it, parked at the gas station in town when I stopped to buy milk. 04:14 The driver had been sitting inside with a baseball cap pulled low over his face, watching people enter and leave the station. 04:22 Saturday night was when I became certain that someone had entered my home. 04:26 Jaime and I had attended the fall festival in town and returned around 8.30. He was exhausted, his face covered with paint, and he was clutching a bag of candy corn he had won playing the ring toss. 04:39 While he took a shower, I went into the kitchen to prepare warm milk with honey for him, something my grandmother used to make for me. 04:47 That was when I noticed it. 04:49 The junk drawer was opened by roughly two inches. 04:52 Under normal circumstances that would not have mattered, but I was compulsive about that particular drawer because it was where I kept our spare house key. 05:01 Everything inside had been shifted around. It had not been carelessly ransacked. The contents had been methodically rearranged. 05:10 The spare key was still there, but instead of being concealed beneath the old phone book where I always kept it, it was lying on top of everything. 05:18 The bottle of pepper spray I stored in the rear corner of the drawer had also been moved to the front, and its cap had been twisted off. 05:25 I did not sleep that night. 05:28 Once Jaime was in bed, I wedged a chair beneath my bedroom doorknob and sat near the window, staring at the driveway. 05:35 At approximately 2 o'clock in the morning, I watched a pair of headlights low near my mailbox before continuing down the road. 05:42 It could have been anybody, but every muscle in my body became rigid as I listened for any sound that did not belong. 05:49 The following morning Sunday, I discovered something that prompted me to call the police for the first time. 05:55 Five cigarette butts were lying beneath Jaime's bedroom window. They were all the same brand, Marlboro Reds, and the filters had been torn off in precisely the same manner. 06:05 They looked fresh, probably left there the previous night while we were attending the festival. 06:11 Officer Marcos came to the house, photographed the cigarette butts, and documented everything I told him. 06:18 However, he explained that without proof of an actual breaking and entering, there was not much the police could do. 06:25 He recommended installing security cameras or perhaps getting a dog. 06:30 I could not afford cameras, and our landlord prohibited pets. 06:34 Monday passed without anything happening, which somehow left me even more anxious. 06:39 I kept Jaime home from school and told the office that he had a stomach bug. 06:43 We remained in the living room all day watching cartoons while I pretended to fold laundry and secretly monitored the windows. 06:50 I had already decided that we would stay with my sister in Indianapolis for several days, at least until I could determine what to do. Unfortunately, she could not pick us up until Wednesday because of her work schedule, and I did not have enough money to rent a car. 07:06 On Tuesday morning, I dropped Jaime off at school as usual. I could not miss another day of work without putting my job at risk. 07:14 Throughout the day at the dental office, I repeatedly checked my phone, expecting something to happen even though I did not know what I was expecting. 07:22 Dr. Morrison noticed how nervous I seemed and asked whether everything was alright. 07:27 I simply nodded, continued cleaning instruments, and attempted to concentrate on the reassuring familiarity of sterilization procedures and inventory sheets. 07:37 That Tuesday evening remains burned into my memory with a level of clarity that still makes me nauseous, even two years later. 07:45 I picked Jaime up from his after-school program at 4.30. We stopped at McDonald's for dinner because I could not tolerate the idea of cooking in that kitchen while surrounded by all those windows. 07:56 We reached home just as the sun began setting. 07:59 Ordinarily, the golden October light made the cornfields appear beautiful, but that evening it only highlighted how completely alone we were. 08:07 Jaime ran upstairs to play with his Legos while I sat at the kitchen table, scrolling through apartment listings on my phone and trying to calculate whether I could afford to terminate the lease early. 08:18 At approximately 7.30 I went upstairs to prepare Jaime's bath. 08:22 The bathroom was located at the far end of the hallway, and as I passed the spare bedroom, I noticed that its door was open. 08:30 That was not inherently unusual, except I clearly remembered closing it that morning because I had hidden Jaime's birthday presents inside the closet. 08:39 When I pushed the door farther open, my heart began pounding so violently that I could hear it in my ears. The window was open. Its screen had been removed and was propped against the interior wall. 08:50 I rushed into Jaime's bedroom, grabbed him, and told him we were going to play a game in which we both had to remain extremely quiet. 08:58 His eyes widened, but he nodded because he trusted me completely. 09:03 We crept downstairs and I reached for the phone I had left on the kitchen counter so I could call 911. 09:09 That was when I heard it. 09:11 A floorboard creaked in the living room, the distinctive sound made whenever someone stepped on the third plank from the wall. 09:18 The noise was slow and deliberate, as though someone were cautiously testing how much weight the board could hold. 09:24 My phone was already in my hand, but when I looked at the screen I saw that there was no signal. 09:29 It showed zero bars. 09:31 Reception had never been particularly reliable in that area, but I could always get at least one bar in the kitchen. 09:38 I reached for the old beige landline mounted on the wall, the telephone that had come with the house. 09:44 It was dead. There was no dial tone and no sound whatsoever. 09:49 The cord remained connected to the wall, but someone had tampered with or cut the line somewhere I could not see. 09:55 Jaime pressed himself against my leg, and I could feel his entire body trembling. 10:00 The living room stood between us and the front door. The back entrance was accessible through the mudroom, but its lock had been broken since we moved in. 10:09 I had been securing it with a wooden dowel. 10:12 Another creek came from the living room closer than the first. 10:16 Then I heard a noise that caused bile to rise into my throat. 10:19 A man cleared his throat. 10:21 He was no longer making any effort to stay quiet. 10:25 He knew we were inside the house, and he knew that we were aware of his presence. 10:30 I pushed Jaime behind me and pulled the largest knife from the wooden block on the counter, the one I normally use to slice watermelons. 10:38 To my surprise, my hand was steady. All the trembling fear I had experienced during the previous week disappeared, replaced by something instinctive and intensely focused. 10:48 I had only one objective. I needed to get my son out of that house. 10:53 The footsteps began advancing toward the kitchen. Heavy boots struck the hardwood floor, no longer attempting to conceal their approach. 11:02 I made a split-second decision. The mudroom offered our only possibility of escape. 11:07 I seized Jaime's hand and we ran. I ripped the wooden dowel away from the door and burst outside into the freezing October night. 11:15 Behind us, I heard the man curse. His footsteps accelerated, but we were already racing through the backyard toward the cornfield. 11:24 Jaime was crying, but he kept running as hard as he could, his small legs moving rapidly beneath him. 11:30 The corn had already been harvested, leaving only dirt and short stalks. There was nowhere for us to hide, but the lights were on at Mr. Garrett's house. 11:40 I lifted Jaime into my arms and ran faster than I had ever run in my life. 11:45 My bare feet slipped against the freezing ground, and I continued gripping the knife in my other hand. 11:51 I could hear the man pursuing us, but he was slower than I was, perhaps because he had not expected us to run. 11:58 We reached Mr. Garrett's front door screaming. Thank God he was home. Thank God he owned a shotgun, and thank God he believed us immediately and called the police while standing guard at his doorway. 12:11 The authorities captured the man 40 minutes later while he was attempting to hitchhike along Route 47. 12:17 His name was Bradley Morris. He was 38 years old and had recently been released from prison after serving five years for aggravated stalking and attempted kidnapping. 12:28 He had been living inside his green pickup truck and observing us for nearly a month. 12:32 Police officers found notebooks in his vehicle containing our schedules, sketches of the house's layout, and even descriptions of the clothes Jaime wore to school. 12:42 Morris had been entering the farmhouse while we were away. studying our habits and waiting for the perfect opportunity. 12:49 The prosecutor later explained that Morris had cut the telephone line that Tuesday morning after I left for work. His plan had been to trap us in the house that night. 12:59 If we had not escaped when we did, if I had attempted to bargain with him or taken Jaime upstairs to hide, I refused to let myself complete that thought. 13:09 We moved into my sister's home the following day. 13:12 I never returned to the farmhouse, not even to retrieve our possessions. 13:17 My sister and her husband drove there later and packed everything for us. Jaime suffered from nightmares for months, although he is doing better now. 13:25 We currently live in a second floor apartment in the city. 13:29 Our door has three locks and we have neighbors surrounding us on every side. Occasionally I miss the peacefulness of the countryside, but I will never again live anywhere isolated. Never. 13:46 Story two. 13:47 The problem with small towns is that everyone assumes they are safe. 13:51 I was 24 years old and worked as a mechanic at the only automotive repair shop in Oakfield, Montana. 13:58 For nearly two years, I had been renting a small house on Cedar Lane. 14:03 It stood exactly where the residential neighborhood ended and the forest began, approximately a quarter mile from my closest neighbor, old Mr. Hawkins, who owned the hardware store. 14:14 I had specifically chosen the house for its isolation. 14:18 After spending every day dealing with customers and their broken down trucks, I enjoyed returning home to silence and solitude. 14:26 That Wednesday in early November, I arrived home at approximately 7 o'clock after spending hours repairing a particularly stubborn transmission in a Ford F-150. I ate some leftover pizza, watched television for a while, and fell into a deep sleep around 11 o'clock. My bedroom was located at the rear of the house and faced the woods. I always slept with the window slightly open because I enjoyed the cold air and the sound of the wind moving through the pine trees. 14:54 A noise that did not belong there woke me. It was neither loud nor abrupt, which somehow made it more disturbing. 15:01 It was a cautious, deliberate clicking sound, metal touching metal, and it came from the direction of my kitchen. 15:09 Still disoriented from sleep, my mind searched for a reasonable explanation. Perhaps the heating system was starting, or maybe the refrigerator was making that strange noise it occasionally produced. 15:21 Then I heard the doorknob rotate slowly and carefully, followed by the faintest squeal from the hinges. 15:27 Someone was opening my back door. The digital clock on my nightstand displayed 2.47 in the morning in harsh red numbers. 15:36 I remember thinking how strange it was that I could see them with such clarity while my heart was hammering violently enough to make everything else appear blurred. 15:44 Someone was inside my home. They were not in the process of breaking in. 15:49 That part was already over. They were moving through my kitchen with a confidence that made my mouth go completely dry. 15:56 For a moment I attempted to convince myself that it might be Mr. Hawkins. 16:01 The old man still had a spare key from the previous winter, when I had been sick with the flu and he'd brought me soup and medicine. 16:08 Maybe something terrible had happened. Perhaps there was a nearby fire or another emergency. But Mr. Hawkins would have telephoned first, or at the very least knocked on the door. 16:19 He certainly would not have crept through my kitchen at nearly three o'clock in the morning. 16:24 Then I noticed a light, a narrow white beam cut through the darkness of the hallway, moving slowly from one side to the other, as though the person holding the flashlight were inspecting every room. 16:36 That was when I heard a second pair of footsteps. There were two intruders. My bedroom door was slightly ajar. 16:43 Through the narrow gap I could see the flashlight beam moving closer, accompanied by the soft scraping of boots against the hardwood floor. 16:51 They were no longer attempting to remain completely silent. They knew precisely where they were going. 16:57 I grabbed the foam from my nightstand, but panic made my fingers feel clumsy and swollen. 17:03 The screen appeared impossibly bright in the darkness as I struggled to dial 911. 17:08 Before I could even unlock it, one of the men spoke. 17:12 Check the back room first, he said. 17:15 His voice was rough and quiet, but clear enough for me to know that he was not anyone I recognized from town. 17:21 There was a flat, emotionless quality to his words that caused my chest to constrict. 17:26 They were perhaps ten feet from my bedroom door. I could hear them breathing. I also heard leather creaking, although I could not determine whether the sound came from gloves or jackets. 17:37 Then I saw them through the crack in the doorway. 17:40 Both figures wore black ski masks and carried flashlights. They moved with a practiced efficiency that made it obvious they had done this before. 17:49 The taller man held something in his free hand that briefly reflected the light. It might have been a knife or it could have been something else. 17:57 I had no intention of waiting to discover what it was. 18:01 My bedroom window was still partly open, just as I had left it before falling asleep. 18:06 I estimated that I had perhaps three seconds before they entered the room. 18:11 Keeping my body low, I rolled quietly out of bed and grabbed the baseball bat propped against my dresser. 18:17 It was a leftover from my high school years that I had never bothered putting into storage. Thank God for lazy habits. 18:24 The window was one of those old-fashioned models that slid upward. I slowly pushed it open the rest of the way, flinching at every faint sound it produced. 18:34 The screen came loose more easily than I expected and dropped into the bushes below with a quiet rustling noise. 18:40 The intruders had reached my bedroom door. I heard the handle begin to rotate. 18:45 I stopped thinking. 18:47 I threw one leg across the windowsill and dropped approximately eight feet to the ground, landing heavily among the wet leaves and mulch. 18:55 My ankle twisted slightly, sending a burst of sharp pain through my leg. But adrenaline can do extraordinary things. 19:03 Before I fully registered that I was outside, I was already running. 19:07 I was barefoot and wore nothing except sweatpants and an old Metallica t-shirt. 19:12 The November air struck me like a solid wall of ice. 19:16 Behind me, voices shouted from inside the house. They had discovered my empty bed. 19:21 A flashlight beam sliced through my bedroom window and swept across the backyard. 19:26 I flattened myself against the side of the house and struggled to control my breathing. 19:31 The light passed over the exact spot where I had been standing only seconds earlier. 19:36 Then the back door, the same entrance they had used, slammed open. 19:40 Boots struck the wooden deck. He went through the window, one of the men called. There was something almost amused in his voice. 19:48 Circle around. He couldn't have gone far. 19:51 That was when the full reality of the situation struck me. 19:55 They were not frightened. They were not scrambling, panicking, or arguing over what to do. 20:01 They had prepared for this possibility as well. 20:04 These men had considered what might happen if I escaped. That meant they had probably been observing me and studying my habits. 20:12 They knew I lived alone, and they knew my closest neighbor was too far away to hear me scream. 20:18 The forest behind the house suddenly appeared to be my only option. 20:22 I knew those paths better than most people. I had been exploring them since moving into the house, occasionally carrying my morning coffee into the woods on weekends. But navigating those trails barefoot and in complete darkness would be a nightmare. 20:36 I had no alternative. 20:38 I heard one man moving around the house from the left, while the other approached from the right. If I did not leave immediately, they would corner me in the backyard. I sprinted toward the tree line, and my bare feet somehow found every jagged rock and broken branch scattered across the yard. 20:54 As soon as I entered the forest, branches began scraping and tearing at my face and shirt. 21:00 I could not follow the main path because it would be far too obvious, so I forced my way through the thick undergrowth while trying to remember where an old deer trail branched away. 21:10 Behind me, both men entered the woods. Their flashlights produced wild, shifting shadows between the trees. 21:17 They were approximately thirty yards behind me. 21:20 They had boots and flashlights while I was stumbling blindly through thorny bushes and fallen limbs. 21:25 Then I remembered the abandoned hunting blind located roughly half a mile into the woods. It had belonged to whoever owned the land before the property was subdivided, and very few people even knew it existed. 21:37 If I could reach it, perhaps I could conceal myself and wait until sunrise. But when I changed direction toward where I believed the blind was located, I heard something that filled me with an entirely different kind of terror. 21:50 One of the men was speaking on a phone. 21:53 Yeah, he's moving northeast through the woods, he said casually, as though he were giving directions to someone delivering a pizza. 22:01 Have them ready at the access road. No, we'll force them out. Give us ten minutes. 22:07 There were more people involved. Other men were waiting beside the road that bordered the opposite side of the forest. 22:13 This was not simply a pair of burglars who had entered my home. It was an organized operation, and I was their target. 22:21 My mind raced as I attempted to understand why. I was only a mechanic. I had no enemies, owed nobody money, and possessed no secrets valuable enough for anyone to care about. 22:33 Then everything became clear and the realization struck me harder than any of the branches had. 22:39 Two weeks earlier, I had repaired a vehicle that arrived at the shop after closing time. 22:45 The owner had called the business directly, offered to pay cash and claimed the repair was urgent. 22:51 It was a black SUV with license plates from another state. 22:55 The man wanted me to repair damage beneath the vehicle and said he had struck a deer. 23:00 However, when I crawled underneath it, I discovered far more than ordinary collision damage. There was blood. 23:07 Human hair was tangled in the metal, along with what appeared to be torn fabric from someone's clothing. 23:13 I should have called the police immediately, but the owner stood nearby and watched every movement I made. 23:19 Something about the lifeless expression in his eyes warned me to remain silent. 23:24 I repaired the damage, accepted his money, and tried to erase the entire incident from my mind. 23:30 However, following the shop's standard procedure, I had copied the SUV's license plate number onto the work order. 23:37 That paperwork was still inside my toolbox at the garage. Perhaps they knew I had recorded it. 23:43 Maybe they suspected I had already spoken to someone. 23:47 Whatever they believed, they had come to eliminate a loose end. 23:50 I was that loose end. The men were getting closer. 23:55 Their flashlight beams moved methodically between the trees. 23:58 My feet were bleeding now, leaving behind a trail that they could probably follow even without a bloodhound. 24:05 The hunting blind remained too far away, and with more people stationed near the access road, they were herding me through the forest like an animal. 24:13 Then another memory surfaced. An old storm drain passed beneath the woods. It had been constructed as part of the town's flood control system sometime in the 1960s. 24:23 The entrance was nearby, concealed behind a cluster of trees that had fallen during a storm the previous spring. 24:30 The passage would be narrow, completely dark, and filled with God only knew what. but its primary outlet emerged near the elementary school on the opposite side of town. 24:40 I shifted directions again and attempted to move more quietly, timing my footsteps with the gusts of wind so they would cover the noise. 24:48 The drainage entrance was exactly where I remembered it. It was a concrete opening approximately four feet high, partly concealed by dead branches and fallen leaves. 24:58 The metal grate that should have blocked the tunnel had rusted away years earlier. 25:02 I could hear water flowing inside, probably runoff left by the recent rain, but it did not sound especially deep. I did not hesitate. Dropping onto my knees, I crawled into the tunnel and immediately entered ankle-deep water so cold that it stole the breath from my lungs. 25:20 The concrete beneath my hands was slippery with algae, or perhaps something worse. 25:25 The smell was precisely what you would expect from decades of stagnant water, mud and decomposing leaves. 25:32 I continued moving, refusing to think about what other creatures might be sharing the tunnel with me. 25:37 After the first few feet, the passage became completely black. I had to feel my way forward with my hands, repeatedly touching things I had no desire to identify. 25:48 Muffled voices reached me from the entrance. 25:51 The blood trail comes in here, someone said. 25:54 A flashlight beam penetrated the darkness, illuminating perhaps 20 feet of the tunnel before a curve blocked it. He went into the drain, the man called. 26:04 No way. You want to follow him inside that? 26:07 Another voice answered, followed by a moment of silence. 26:11 Call the others. Tell them to watch the outlet near the school. We'll stay here. 26:17 They believed they had trapped me, but they did not know about the maintenance junction approximately 200 yards farther inside, where the drain separated into three different tunnels. 26:27 I kept crawling. 26:29 My knees scraped painfully against the coarse concrete while the water gradually deepened. 26:34 At one point, something brushed against my leg. 26:37 It was probably a rat, but I clenched my teeth to prevent myself from crying out. 26:42 Eventually, the maintenance junction appeared as a space that was only marginally less dark than the rest of the tunnel. 26:48 I entered the left passage, which I was reasonably certain led toward Main Street instead of the elementary school. 26:55 The men could wait at the wrong outlet. The left-hand tunnel was older, narrower. and partially collapsed in several places where tree roots had penetrated the concrete. 27:06 At times I had to flatten myself against the floor and squeeze forward on my stomach. 27:11 The water became deep enough that I needed to keep my chin raised above the surface in order to breathe. 27:16 After what felt like several hours, but was probably only 20 minutes, I noticed light ahead. 27:23 A storm grate opened toward a streetlight and I could hear vehicles traveling above me. 27:29 I had reached Jefferson Avenue in the center of town. 27:32 I pressed my shoulder against the grate and by some miracle it shifted. 27:37 I shoved it aside and dragged myself onto the street, probably resembling a creature from a horror film. 27:44 I was drenched, coated with mud and blood, and my clothing had been ripped to pieces. 27:49 A passing vehicle swerved to avoid hitting me. its horn blaring. 27:53 I staggered toward the 24-hour gas station on the corner. The teenager working the overnight shift took one look at me and immediately reached for the telephone. 28:03 Within minutes, police officers surrounded me as I struggled to explain what had happened. 28:08 I sat in the rear of an ambulance wrapped in an emergency blanket and trembling from shock. 28:14 Officers found my house deserted. The back door remained open, and blood from my injured feet marked the ground. 28:21 The men, however, had vanished. 28:23 Police located the black SUV approximately three hours later. 28:28 It had been abandoned in a field near Highway 18 and set on fire. 28:32 The license plate number I had written on the work order belonged to a vehicle reported stolen in Nevada two months earlier. 28:39 The authorities never found the men who entered my house that night. 28:43 The detective assigned to my case was a woman named Detective Navarro, and she believed everything I told her. 28:50 Investigators discovered evidence of the hit and run I had described inside the burned SUV, including DNA belonging to a person who had disappeared from Reno. 29:00 Detective Navarro arranged for me to enter witness protection. 29:04 She helped me move to another state and assume a new identity. 29:07 A new name, a new home, a new everything. 29:11 She told me I had done the right thing by surviving. 29:15 Once the authorities captured those men, she said my testimony might help solve several different cases. 29:21 That happened three years ago. 29:23 I am still a mechanic, but I now work in a large city where neighbors rarely know one another. 29:29 That arrangement suits me perfectly. 29:32 I live in an apartment building with security cameras and a doorman. I no longer work late, never accept jobs paid in cash, and certainly do not repair vehicles with suspicious damage. 29:44 The FBI agent who visits me every few months says the investigation remains active. 29:49 According to her, the organization connected to those men is much larger than a group attempting to conceal a single hit and run. 29:56 Sometimes she shows me photographs and asks whether I recognize anyone. 30:01 I never do. 30:02 Yet every night as I lie in bed, I still listen for noises that should not be there. Metal clicking against metal, a doorknob turning carefully, or footsteps moving where no one ought to be. 30:14 They assure me I am safe now. Those men supposedly have no reason to pursue me because I am officially protected within the system, and my testimony has already been recorded. 30:25 But sometimes I wonder whether they are still somewhere out there, waiting and watching, fully aware of when I will be alone and when no one will hear me call for help. 30:34 Because that is the truth about predators who hunt together. They are patient, and they never forget. 30:46 Story 3 Pinewood, Arkansas was the last place I ever expected to find myself in August 2022, particularly after promising 15 years earlier that I would never return. 30:59 Nevertheless, there I was, driving past the faded sign announcing a population of 8,000. 31:05 My press credentials were tucked inside the glove compartment, and 17 burglary reports were scattered across the passenger seat. 31:13 My editor at the Chicago Tribune had been monitoring the story through various wire services. 31:18 Elderly residents were being robbed in broad daylight. There were no signs of forced entry, and every incident followed the same pattern. 31:27 The local police claimed to be baffled, or at least that was what they continued telling the newspapers until media coverage mysteriously disappeared after the 10th burglary. 31:37 Something about the entire situation smelled worse than the paper mill that once operated on the southern edge of town. 31:43 My editor believed that my connection to Pinewood might persuade people to open doors they would keep closed to reporters from elsewhere. 31:51 I arrived at the Sunset Lodge at approximately 4 o'clock that afternoon. The August heat caused everything in the distance to ripple like a mirage. The motel appeared exactly as I remembered it, peeling paint, a neon sign with half its letters burned out, and the same fractured asphalt parking lot where local teenagers once drank beer and made terrible choices. 32:13 Mrs. Colbert was still behind the reception desk, although her hair had become completely gray. 32:19 The cigarette that once seemed permanently attached to her fingers had been replaced with an electronic device that made it look as though she were smoking a pen. 32:27 She recognized me before I finished writing my name in the register. 32:31 Her eyes narrowed behind the thick glasses she had worn since the Clinton administration. 32:36 Well, well. Tommy's boy finally came home, she said as she pushed the key to room 12 across the counter. 32:44 I heard through the grapevine that you've been asking about those break-ins. Let me give you some advice for free. 32:50 Sheriff Calder doesn't appreciate outsiders asking questions. And as far as he's concerned, you've been an outsider since the day you left. 32:59 My first visit the following morning was to Mrs. Eleanor Hutchinson's home on Dogwood Drive. According to my notes, she was victim number 14. 33:08 She lived in one of those single-story ranch houses constructed during the 1960s, complete with ceramic garden gnomes and a doormat reading, Bless This Mess. 33:18 Mrs. Hutchinson invited me inside and offered me sweet tea. Her hands trembled slightly as she poured it, although I could not determine whether the shaking came from her age or her anxiety. 33:30 The living room smelled of potpourri and cat litter. 33:33 Before I could sit, she had to move an enormous orange tabby from the couch. 33:38 They stole my mother's pearl necklace, she said, blotting her eyes with a tissue she pulled from her sleeve. 33:45 They also took about $300 that I kept in a coffee can above the refrigerator. But the strangest part was that they knew precisely where everything was. They didn't touch anything else or leave a mess. It was like they had already been inside my house and knew exactly where to search. 34:02 I asked how the police had responded. Her entire manner immediately changed. 34:07 She glanced toward the window and leaned forward in her reclining chair, causing the leather to groan beneath her weight. 34:14 Sheriff Calder arrived about two hours after I called, she whispered, despite the fact that we were alone except for the cat. 34:22 Two hours, when the police station is only ten minutes from here. 34:26 Once he finally showed up, he barely inspected anything. He wrote down a few details and promised they would investigate. 34:34 But here's what truly frightened me. While I was explaining what had been stolen, he already knew about the coffee can. I hadn't told him about it yet. 34:42 I was still describing the jewelry. He tried to dismiss it by saying, All elderly people hide money in their kitchens, but I recognized the expression in his eyes. My husband used to look exactly the same way whenever I caught him lying about his poker games. 34:58 Over the next three days, I interviewed six additional victims, and the pattern became impossible to dismiss. 35:06 Every one of them said Sheriff Calder took between 90 minutes and two hours to arrive after they called, despite Pinewood being small enough to cross by car in approximately 12 minutes. 35:17 Mrs. Gladys Newcomb, who lived on Elm Street, said she waited for an hour before driving to the station herself. 35:23 When she arrived, Calder's patrol vehicle was parked behind the building, even though the deputy working at the front desk insisted the sheriff was responding to another call. 35:33 Mr. Arnold Fishman told me that Calder had fresh dirt covering his boots when he finally arrived at the crime scene. 35:39 It was red clay, the same kind found in the woods behind the old Hutchkins property, nowhere close to the location where Calder claimed he had been investigating a traffic collision. 35:50 The most unsettling interview was with Walter Briggs, a Vietnam veteran who lived alone in a duplex beside the railroad tracks. 35:58 Walter produced a notebook in which he had recorded every burglary. 36:02 He had also marked each incident on a calendar with a red axe. 36:06 Do you notice anything? He asked, pointing at the dates with an unsteady finger. 36:11 Every robbery occurred on a day when Calder was supposedly patrolling alone. He never had a deputy with him. 36:18 That evening I went to Murphy's Diner for dinner. Hoping I might overhear local gossip about the burglaries. 36:25 The restaurant looked exactly as it had when I was younger. 36:28 Its vinyl booths were cracked, its fluorescent lights flickered, and the coffee was strong enough to remove paint. 36:35 I had eaten approximately half my meatloaf when Carl Dobson slid into the seat across from me. 36:40 Carl had been two grades ahead of me in high school. 36:44 He still wore his class ring and now worked at the hardware store. 36:48 He skipped the small talk, leaned across the table, and lowered his voice until I could barely hear him above the ancient air conditioning unit rattling in the window. 36:57 You need to get out of town, he said, glancing toward the entrance every few seconds. 37:02 Leave tonight. Pack your belongings and return to Chicago. You're digging into matters that have been buried for years. 37:10 Calder has connections you know nothing about. 37:13 People who have owed him favors for decades. 37:16 My brother-in-law ran against him in the sheriff's election back in 2016. 37:21 He started questioning evidence that had disappeared from the property lockup. Two weeks later, his house burned down. 37:29 They called it an electrical malfunction. He understood the warning and dropped out of the race. 37:34 I did not leave Pinewood that night. It might have been the most foolish decision of my life, and I have made plenty of terrible ones. 37:43 Instead, I returned to my motel room and began assembling everything I had uncovered. 37:48 I spread the notes across the bed as though they were pieces of a puzzle. 37:52 The robberies, the delayed police responses, and the fact that Calder always patrolled alone on the days the crimes occurred clearly pointed towards something. 38:01 However, I needed stronger evidence than questionable timing in red clay on a pair of boots. 38:06 At approximately 11 o'clock, I heard a vehicle idling outside. It produced the distinctive rumble of a Crown Victoria, the model that once seemed to serve as every police car in the country. 38:19 I pulled the curtain aside just far enough to look through the window. Calder's patrol car was parked on the opposite side of the street. 38:27 Its lights were off, but the engine continued running. 38:30 I could distinguish the outline of someone sitting behind the steering wheel. 38:34 Every so often the orange glow of a cigarette briefly illuminated the person's face. 38:39 The car remained there for 45 minutes. Whoever sat inside never moved or stepped out. They simply watched my motel room. 38:48 The next morning I discovered a slash in the left rear tire of my rental car. 38:53 It was a clean incision that could not possibly have resulted from debris on the road. 38:58 Mrs. Colbert, the woman at the front desk, suddenly could not recall witnessing anything unusual the previous night. 39:05 She would not even look at me when I asked whether she had seen the patrol vehicle. 39:10 The mechanic at the local repair shop glanced at my Michigan license plates and announced that he would not have the correct replacement tire for at least three days, perhaps four. 39:20 I was stranded and everyone in Pinewood appeared to know it. 39:23 That afternoon I walked to the public library to use one of its computers because the wireless internet at my motel had mysteriously stopped functioning. 39:32 I had barely signed into my email account to send my editor an update when Betty Garrison approached me. 39:38 Betty was the head librarian and had worked there since the days when I checked out Hardy Boy's books. She leaned closer and whispered that Calder had just entered the building. 39:47 Sure enough, he was standing near the periodicals pretending to read a newspaper while repeatedly looking in my direction. 39:54 He was a large man, considerably larger than I remembered. 39:59 His arms resembled ham hocks and his stomach hung over his duty belt. 40:03 Once he realized I had noticed him, he slowly folded the newspaper, walked over to my table, and sat without requesting permission. 40:12 I've heard you've been speaking to people, he said. His voice sounded friendly enough, but his eyes were as cold as January. 40:19 He removed a tin of chewing tobacco, placed a wad beneath his lower lip and continued. 40:25 You see, people in small towns sometimes become confused. That is especially true of older folks. They remember events incorrectly, mix up times and create connections where none exist. 40:38 Mrs. Hutchinson, for example, is a lovely woman, but she has taken anxiety medication ever since her husband passed away. 40:45 It makes her paranoid. And Walter Briggs, well, that man has seen conspiracies everywhere since returning from NAM. You can't believe every story people tell you. 40:56 Calder leaned backward, and the chair creaked beneath his weight. 41:00 I noticed that one hand rested on his service weapon. 41:04 The gesture was not overtly threatening, but he clearly wanted me to see it. 41:09 Now, I understand that you have a job, he continued. You're writing your little article for that newspaper in Chicago. But sometimes the real story isn't the one you imagine. Sometimes it's nothing more than a series of break-ins committed by some tweaker passing through town and a sheriff's department doing everything it can with limited resources. 41:29 There's nothing more interesting to it than that. 41:32 That was when I made my second foolish decision of the week. I took out my phone and showed Calder the photograph I had taken of Walter's calendar, with all the burglary dates marked. 41:43 It's strange that this tweaker only commits robberies when you're patrolling without a deputy, I said, watching his jaw become tense. 41:51 It's also strange that you always appear to be on the opposite side of Pinewood when the calls come in. 41:56 His face turned red, beginning at his neck and moving upward like wine spreading across a tablecloth. 42:03 He rose so violently that the chair overturned behind him. 42:07 For a moment I believed he was going to seize me in the middle of the library. Instead he leaned close enough for me to smell tobacco and stale coffee on his breath. 42:16 You have no idea what you're getting involved with, boy. This isn't Chicago. 42:21 Reporters sometimes suffer accidents out here. A car might leave the road on a dark night. Maybe somebody falls down the stairs at that old motel. 42:31 It has happened before, ask Jimmy Watts. Actually, you can't. He drove into Lake Buchanan in 2014 after he started investigating matters that didn't concern him. 42:42 A tragic accident, they said. Brake lines can fail on these old rural roads. 42:48 He straightened, repositioned his gun belt, and smiled. The expression contained plenty of teeth but no warmth. 42:55 You have yourself a pleasant day. 42:57 You might also want to consider going home soon. Tomorrow morning would be ideal, before anything unfortunate occurs. 43:06 I left the library with my legs feeling like gelatin, but I had not finished my investigation. 43:11 That night, instead of waiting helplessly inside the motel room, I parked my rental car, with the spare tire now installed, behind the abandoned Texaco gas station. 43:23 From there I walked back to the Sunset Lodge through the woods. 43:26 I sat in the unlit bathroom with the door partly open and watched through the window. 43:31 At approximately midnight, Calder's patrol car arrived again. This time he climbed out. He carried something in one hand. It resembled either a Slim Jim or a set of lockpicks. 43:43 Calder approached my motel room, stood outside the door for approximately a minute, and listened. 43:49 Then he began manipulating the lock. 43:52 In the stillness of the night I could hear metal scraping against metal. 43:56 It took him fewer than 30 seconds to open the door. 43:59 He entered my room and I heard him searching through it. He was presumably looking either for me or for my notes. 44:06 After approximately five minutes, Calder stepped outside, locked the door again and drove away. 44:12 I waited for another hour before carefully returning to inspect the room. 44:17 Nothing had been stolen, but my laptop displayed a different screen than the one I had left open, and someone had moved my notebook. 44:24 Calder had been searching for the evidence I had collected. He wanted to determine exactly how much I knew. The next morning I did not flee as he had demanded. Instead, I drove directly to the state police barracks in Centerville, 40 miles away. 44:40 It turned out that state investigators had received complaints about Calder for years, but had never been able to gather enough evidence to act against him. 44:49 Once I showed them Walter's calendar, explained the pattern connecting Calder's solo patrols to the burglaries, and described how he had unlawfully entered my motel room, they finally had enough information to launch a serious investigation. 45:03 For my protection, they placed me in a hotel in Centerville and dispatched a team to Pinewood. 45:09 Within a week, investigators had uncovered the entire scheme. 45:13 Calder had personally committed the burglaries. He used his official position to study elderly residents' houses during wellness checks, then entered the homes when he knew the occupants would be attending church or visiting their doctors. 45:26 Over two years, he had stolen property and money worth more than $200,000. 45:32 The FBI became involved after investigators learned that Calder had transported and sold some of the stolen items across state lines. 45:40 The last information I received was that he faced between 15 and 20 years in federal prison. 45:46 What still makes me feel sick is knowing that nearly everyone in Pinewood sensed that something was wrong, but they were too frightened to say anything. 45:54 It required an outsider returning home to expose the corruption that had been operating openly in front of them. 46:00 I never visited Pinewood again. 46:03 I later heard that the town elected a new sheriff, a woman from Dallas who had no relationship with the old local establishment. 46:10 Perhaps the town is different now, but small towns possess very long memories. and I have no desire to discover whether Pinewood has forgiven me for destroying its corrupt king. 46:26 Story 4 About 40 minutes outside Riverside, just off Highway 22, there was a diner that became practically my second home for nearly two years. 46:38 I was 23 and worked double shifts most days because I was saving money for nursing school. 46:43 Waiting tables was hardly my dream career, but it covered my expenses. There was nothing remarkable about the diner. 46:50 It had red vinyl booths patched with the duct tape, a jukebox that played only half the songs people selected, and coffee that tasted like scorched rubber if it sat in the pot for too long. 47:01 Still the tips were fairly good, particularly from the truck drivers who stopped at all hours of the day and night. 47:08 My manager Frank also allowed me to study during the quiet periods between the lunch and dinner crowds. 47:14 On that particular Saturday in early spring, I had been working since 5 o'clock in the morning. My feet were already aching inside my worn-out sneakers. 47:23 The breakfast rush had been brutal because two tour buses arrived unexpectedly. 47:28 I barely had enough time to eat a slice of toast before the first lunch customers began coming through the door. 47:35 At approximately 2.30, after the final customers from the lunch crowd had left, Frank ordered me to take a proper break. 47:43 I retrieved my jacket and walked into the rear parking area where the employees kept their cars. 47:49 After spending the entire morning beneath the diner's severe fluorescent lighting, I desperately needed silence and fresh air. 47:56 The afternoon sunlight felt wonderful against my face. 48:00 I decided to drive to the gas station approximately a mile up the highway and purchase an energy drink, something with enough caffeine to carry me through the dinner shift. 48:10 The stretch of road connecting the diner to the gas station was normally deserted at that time of day. It was a straight strip of asphalt surrounded by lifeless fields and occasional groups of pine trees. 48:22 I had rolled down my windows, allowing the cold air to whip through my hair, when I saw it happen approximately 200 yards ahead of me. 48:30 A woman was jogging along the shoulder. 48:33 She wore one of those bright yellow safety vests that seemed to glow beneath the afternoon sun. 48:38 Earbuds covered her ears, and her ponytail bounced with every stride. 48:43 She appeared completely absorbed in a run. Then a truck came speeding around the gentle curve. 48:49 It was a massive dark blue Ford F-350 equipped with aftermarket chrome bumpers. 48:55 The driver was traveling at least 70 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone. 49:00 He must have been texting or adjusting the radio because the truck gradually drifted onto the shoulder. 49:06 The collision was immediate and horrifying. The woman's body flew through the air like a rag doll before landing in the ditch approximately 30 feet from the point of impact. 49:16 The truck veered back onto the highway and fishtailed briefly. 49:20 Then it continued driving. 49:22 The driver never even touched the brakes. 49:25 The entire incident lasted perhaps three seconds, but every detail became branded into my memory as clearly as a photograph. 49:33 I slammed on my brakes and my car screeched to a halt. 49:37 I jumped out and ran toward the ditch while struggling to retrieve my phone. 49:41 The woman was lying at an unnatural angle. Her left leg had been bent entirely backward. 49:47 Blood collected beneath her head and spread through the dry grass. Her eyes remained open, staring blankly at nothing. 49:55 Even before I reached her I understood that she was dead. 49:58 I checked her pulse anyway. My fingers shook against her neck but I felt nothing except skin that was already beginning to cool. 50:06 I called 911 and could barely force out the words. 50:10 I reported the hit and run and gave the dispatcher every detail I could remember about the truck. Its model, its dark blue color, the chrome bumpers, and even the Georgia Bulldog sticker I had noticed on the rear window as it disappeared down the highway. 50:25 The dispatcher kept me on the telephone until an ambulance and two police cruisers arrived. 50:31 I remained in the ditch for what seemed like hours, although it was probably no longer than fifteen minutes. 50:37 I could not stop looking at the woman's face. 50:40 She appeared young, perhaps in her early thirties. 50:44 A small scar passed through her left eyebrow and freckles covered the bridge of her nose. 50:49 Officer Dunham was the first police officer to arrive. He was a man in his 50s with a dense gray mustache and a stomach that hung over his utility belt. 50:58 He took my statement beside the highway while the paramedics worked around the woman's body, even though everyone present understood that there was nothing they could do for her. 51:08 I told him everything. The precise time of the collision, the truck's appearance, its approximate speed, and the direction in which it had fled. Dunham nodded while writing in a small notebook. 51:20 His pen repeatedly stopped working, forcing him to trace over the same words more than once. 51:25 When I described the Georgia Bulldog sticker, he raised his head and looked directly at me for the first time. 51:32 His expression was impossible to read behind his aviator sunglasses. 51:37 You're certain about that sticker? He asked. 51:40 I told him I was absolutely positive. He wrote something else in the notebook before informing me that I would have to visit the station later and complete an official report. 51:50 He assured me that the department would immediately issue an all-points bulletin for the truck. 51:55 I returned to the diner in a daze. I could barely concentrate on taking customers' orders or refilling their coffee. 52:03 Frank eventually sent me home early after noticing me standing motionless with my order pad forgotten in my hand while customers waited for service. 52:11 At approximately 7 o'clock that evening, I drove to the police station on Riverside's Main Street. 52:17 It was a low brick building that shared its parking area with the courthouse. The desk sergeant, a woman with bleach blonde hair and long acrylic fingernails, directed me toward Officer Dunham's desk in the rear corner of the main room. 52:31 He was working on an ancient computer, striking the keyboard with two fingers and barely looking up when I sat down. 52:39 I only need to type up the official version of your statement, he explained as he removed a form from a desk drawer. 52:46 We reviewed the incident again. He asked the same questions in the same sequence, and I repeated the same answers. However, something felt different. 52:56 Dunham appeared hurried, as if he were merely following a routine he wanted to finish as quickly as possible. 53:02 When we were done, he instructed me to sign the bottom of the form. 53:06 Then he did something that filled me with uneasiness. He folded the report in half and then folded it a second time, reducing it to a small square. 53:15 Afterward, he tossed it into his desk drawer as casually as if it were scrap paper. 53:20 He did not place it in a filing cabinet or an inbox where official reports were waiting to be processed. He threw it among rubber bands, paper clips and old candy wrappers cluttering the drawer. 53:31 We'll contact you if we require anything further, he said, already turning back toward his computer. 53:38 I remained seated for a few moments, confused and waiting for him to mention the investigation. 53:43 I expected him to say something about locating the truck or finding justice for the woman who had died in that ditch. 53:50 Instead, he resumed typing with two fingers, clicking at the keyboard as though I had already left. 53:56 I walked out of the station feeling as if I had swallowed a stone. A heavy sense that something was terribly wrong settled in my stomach. 54:04 During the following three days, I obsessively monitored the local news. 54:09 I waited for a report about the fatal hit and run or an announcement that police were searching for a dark blue Ford F-350. There was nothing. The story was not mentioned once. 54:21 I called the police department twice and requested an update. 54:24 On both occasions, the call was transferred from one person to another until someone promised that Officer Dunham would contact me. He never called. 54:33 I could not stop remembering the woman's face, the freckles on her nose, and the scar crossing her eyebrow. 54:40 She must have had relatives and friends, people who loved her and were wondering why she had not come home. 54:47 During my lunch break that Wednesday, I drove past the location of the collision. 54:52 I half expected to find flowers, a wooden cross or some other memorial marking the place where she died. 54:59 The roadside was perfectly clean as though nothing had ever happened there. Even the blood had disappeared from the grass. 55:06 I could not tell whether the recent rain had washed it away or whether someone had deliberately cleaned the area. 55:12 On Friday afternoon, I needed to visit the bank and deposit the tips I had earned that week. The branch was located on the opposite side of town beyond the police station, and I followed the back road to avoid the lunchtime congestion on the main street. 55:26 That was when I saw the trunk. 55:29 Behind the police station was a fenced enclosure where the department stored impounded vehicles and patrol cars awaiting repairs. Parked inside that enclosure was a dark blue Ford F-350. 55:40 My heart began pounding so violently that I could hear it in my ears. 55:45 I turned into the McDonald's parking lot next door so I could examine the truck more closely through the chain link fence. 55:51 It had the same aftermarket chrome bumpers and every other detail I remembered. 55:56 On the rear window was the same Georgia Bulldog sticker I had described to Officer Dunham. 56:01 What nearly made me vomit, however, was the damage to the truck's front right side. The bumper was dented, the headlight was fractured, and something resembling dried blood and human hair was caught in the grill. I remained in my car for approximately 20 minutes, desperately attempting to understand what I was seeing. 56:20 The truck that had killed the woman was sitting behind the Riverside Police Department. There was no way to know how long it had been there, and nobody appeared to be doing anything about it. 56:30 My thoughts raced through every possible explanation. 56:34 Perhaps the officers had found the vehicle and were processing it for evidence. Maybe its owner had surrendered voluntarily. But if that were true, why had the local news said nothing? Why had Officer Dunham never returned my calls? And why had he treated my official report like garbage before throwing it into his desk drawer? 56:54 For a moment I considered entering the station and demanding an explanation. 56:58 Something prevented me from doing it. 57:01 I remembered how Dunamit looked at me when I mentioned the sticker. 57:05 I remembered the way he folded my statement and discarded it. and now the damaged truck was parked openly behind the station. 57:12 All those details pointed toward a conclusion I did not want to accept. Someone inside that police department knew who had driven the truck, and they were protecting that person. 57:23 I spent the entire weekend paralyzed by indecision. 57:26 I barely slept because the dead woman's face appeared every time I closed my eyes. 57:31 By Monday morning I had reached a decision. 57:34 I drove 40 minutes to the state police barracks in Millerton. 57:38 I entered with every detail written down and photographs of the truck that I had taken through the fence and printed at CVS. 57:46 The trooper who received my report was a younger officer named Sergeant Cole. He listened to the entire account without interrupting. 57:54 His expression became increasingly serious with every detail I provided. 57:59 Sergeant Cole copied all my documents and asked questions Officer Dunham had never bothered asking. 58:04 He wanted exact times, the names of anyone who might have seen the truck at the station, and whether anybody had attempted to threaten or intimidate me. 58:13 He promised that the State Police would investigate. Before I left, he gave me his direct telephone number and instructed me to contact him if anything else occurred. 58:23 Two weeks later, Sergeant Cole called to inform me that the State Police had opened an investigation. not only into the fatal hit and run, but also into how the Riverside Police Department had handled the case. 58:34 The truth emerged piece by piece over the next several months. 58:38 The Ford F-350 belonged to Officer Dunham's nephew, a young man named Brandon. He had already received two charges for driving under the influence, both of which had been reduced to less serious offenses. The woman who died was Anna Shelton. 58:54 She was a nurse from a town two communities away and had been training for a marathon. 58:59 Her family had been informed that an unidentified vehicle struck her. 59:03 The Riverside Police Department then closed the case, claiming there was insufficient evidence to continue investigating. 59:10 Officer Dunham was fired. Brandon received a five-year prison sentence for vehicular manslaughter and fleeing the scene of the collision. 59:18 Three additional officers were suspended because they had participated in concealing the truth. 59:24 I was required to testify during the trial. 59:27 As I sat inside the courtroom, Dunham stared at me as though I had violated some sacred code of loyalty. 59:33 But the only people I could think about were Anna Shelton's relatives, who finally knew what had happened to her. 59:39 I resigned from the diner after the trial concluded. I could no longer pass that section of Highway 22 without becoming physically ill. 59:47 I started over at a restaurant in Millerton, which was closer to the nursing school I had finally begun attending. 59:54 Sometimes I still dream about the instant I noticed the truck behind the police station. 59:59 I remembered the sensation of realizing that the people who were supposed to protect us were the same ones attempting to bury the truth. 60:10 Story 5 I had lived in that little yellow house for precisely two weeks when the Richardson family moved into the property next door. 60:20 I was 24 years old and worked from home as a graphic designer. 60:24 I had chosen that peaceful street in a small Ohio town specifically because nothing ever seemed to happen there. 60:31 Or at least that was what I believed. 60:33 My daily routine was predictable. 60:36 I woke at seven o'clock, prepared coffee in a kitchen that was strangely larger than the living room, sat at the desk beside my window, and created logos for startup companies that would probably collapse within six months. 60:49 The house had plenty of peculiarities. The bathroom door scraped against the toilet, my bedroom contained exposed brick, and the original hardwood floors loudly announced every step anyone took. 61:01 However, the rent was only $800 per month, so I had little reason to complain. 61:07 My landlord, Mr. Hoffman, lives somewhere in Florida. 61:10 During our single telephone conversation, he made it clear that as long as my rent arrived on schedule, I might as well have been invisible to him. 61:19 The Richardsons arrived at 2 o'clock on a Wednesday morning. The timing seemed extremely strange, although I happened to be awake. 61:27 I was deeply involved in a project for a client who apparently believed that urgent meant the assignment should have been completed yesterday. 61:35 From my office window, I watched their moving truck stop outside the neighboring house. 61:40 There was none of the ordinary confusion or noise associated with moving. 61:44 Four people climbed out and began unloading boxes in absolute silence. They did not speak or even grunt from the physical effort. They simply worked with an unsettling coordination that made the hair rise along my arms. 61:58 One of them was a teenage boy wearing a baseball cap so low that his face remained completely hidden in shadow. 62:05 There was also a younger girl, perhaps 12 years old, whose hair was so pale that it looked almost white beneath the streetlights. 62:12 The parents had the sort of ordinary faces you might see at a gas station and immediately forget. 62:18 The only unusual thing about them was the way they moved together, like dancers who had rehearsed the same routine a thousand times. They never once crossed paths or obstructed one another. 62:29 During the first three days after their arrival, I waited for ordinary neighborly activities to begin. 62:36 I expected someone to mow the grass, children to play outside, or perhaps a brief wave when one of us happened to collect the mail. 62:44 None of those things occurred. Their house remained completely motionless. Heavy curtains were drawn tightly across every window, and no light could be seen from inside even after nightfall. 62:56 The only evidence that anyone occupied the property was a beige sedan. 63:00 It departed every morning at exactly 7.15 and returned every evening at precisely 5.45. 63:07 The schedule was so accurate that I could have adjusted my watch according to it. 63:12 I began noticing details about the Richardsons that I had never bothered observing in anyone else. 63:17 Their garbage cans appeared beside the curb at 3 o'clock in the morning on collection day. Packages disappeared from the front porch only minutes after delivery, despite the fact that I never witnessed anyone opening the door. 63:30 Their lawn remained exactly two inches high, although I never once saw anyone mowing it. 63:36 My home office window directly faced a second floor window in the Richardson house. 63:41 Thick burgundy curtains prevented me from seeing inside, yet I constantly felt as though someone were staring at me while I worked. 63:48 By the second week, the sensation of being observed had become something heavier. Whenever I sat at my desk, it felt as if unseen fingers were pressing against my temples. 63:59 Every few minutes I would catch myself looking away from my computer and toward those curtains, expecting to find them pulled aside. They never moved. There was not even a faint flutter from an air conditioning vent or from someone passing behind them. 64:15 One afternoon, while creating a banner for a website, I decided to test whether my imagination was controlling me. 64:21 Without warning, I spun around in my chair. I swear I saw the burgundy curtain snap closed, although it happened so quickly that I could not be certain. 64:31 That evening, I began shutting my own blinds whenever I worked. The feeling of being watched did not disappear. 64:38 It crawled across my skin like static electricity and left me so nervous that I spilled coffee on my keyboard twice in a single day. 64:46 Everything changed on a Friday in early December. I had to drive to Columbus for a meeting with a client, and the appointment continued absurdly late. 64:55 The presentation went well, but the company's chief executive officer repeatedly requested one final revision. 65:03 It was after 9 o'clock before I finally escaped. During the two-hour journey home, I struggled to remain awake. 65:10 I drank energy drinks purchased at gas stations, blasted loud music, and kept my windows partially open despite the freezing temperature. 65:19 I pulled into my driveway at precisely 11.47 p.m. 65:23 I was exhausted and already dreading the follow-up messages I would need to send the next morning. 65:29 As usual, the Richardson house was completely dark, yet something seemed different. 65:34 Their beige sedan was not parked in its normal position. 65:38 It sat at an unusual angle, as though someone had abandoned it hastily. 65:43 My fingers were numb from the cold as I searched for my keys beside the front door. When I placed my hand on the doorknob, it turned without resistance. 65:52 The door was already unlocked. Initially, I assumed I had forgotten to secure it while rushing to leave that morning. But I clearly remembered checking it twice because I had left my laptop sitting on the kitchen table. 66:04 The interior was as dark as it had been when I departed. 66:08 However, the air felt disturbed, almost as though someone had walked through the rooms and unsettled all the dust. 66:14 I switched on the entryway light. That was when I saw the footprints. Muddy tracks led from the front entrance and crossed my living room. They were enormous impressions from boots that must have been at least a size 13. 66:27 The person had not wandered around or explored the house randomly. The footprints moved in deliberate, purposeful steps toward the hallway leading to my bedroom and office. 66:37 The mud remained wet and glistened beneath the ceiling light. When I crouched to inspect it, I noticed fragments of red clay mixed with the dirt. It was the same kind of soil found at the construction site three blocks away, where a new condominium complex was being built. Every instinct told me to return to my vehicle and call the police from a safe location. 66:58 Nevertheless, something compelled me to follow the footprints deeper into the house. 67:02 My phone was already in my hand. I had entered 911 but had not pressed the call button. My thumb hovered above it while I moved cautiously forward. 67:12 The tracks continued into my office and ended abruptly beside my desk chair. 67:16 Someone had rotated the chair until it faced the window, the same window that looked directly toward the Richardson house. 67:23 My computer remained in place and appeared untouched. However, the notebook I occasionally used for sketching design ideas had been opened to a blank page. 67:32 Someone had used one of my pencils to draw an intricate floor plan of my home. Every room was labeled correctly. The drawing even contained observations about details that only someone who had entered the house could have known. Squeaky floorboard here. 67:47 Bathroom door sticks. 67:49 Keeps coffee maker on kitchen table. 67:52 At the bottom of the page, someone had written a sentence in handwriting so precise that it looked as if it had been printed. 67:58 You watch us. We watch you. 68:02 The instant I finished reading those words I heard something overhead. 68:06 Footsteps were moving softly through my attic. 68:09 I had never entered that space because the pull-down ladder had been painted shut. 68:13 The ceiling creaked in a rhythm suggesting that someone was pacing back and forth while waiting for something. 68:19 Then the movement abruptly stopped directly above my position. 68:23 My body became completely rigid. In the hallway, the attic entrance began scraping open. 68:29 The old paint cracked and tiny white fragments fell onto the carpet below. 68:34 I did not remain there to discover what was about to descend from the attic. 68:38 I rushed through the front entrance, ran to my car, and called 911 while driving away. 68:44 The dispatcher repeatedly asked me to slow down and explain the situation clearly. 68:49 But how was I supposed to explain that someone had apparently been living in my attic? It was someone who understood my house better than I did. Someone who had been observing me just as carefully as I had been monitoring the strange darkened house next door. 69:03 Police officers found him 40 minutes later. It was the Richardson's teenage son. 69:09 He was curled inside my attic with a sleeping bag, empty food packages, and three notebooks filled with observations about my daily schedule. 69:18 He had been living there for two weeks, beginning around the same time I started closing my blinds. 69:24 He accessed the attic through a concealed opening at the rear of my bedroom closet. 69:29 I had never noticed the panel because my hanging clothes covered it. 69:32 The officers said he had created a small hole in the ceiling that was positioned perfectly for him to observe my office through a gap in the insulation. 69:41 At night, while I slept, he climbed down to use my bathroom and steal food from my kitchen. The boy's name was Emma. He did not resist arrest or attempt to escape. He simply remained seated with an empty expression while the officers placed him in handcuffs. He never spoke even when they addressed him with direct questions. 70:00 His parents arrived within minutes. They stood in my front yard without showing any visible emotion. 70:07 Emma's mother said only one thing to me. 70:10 He likes to understand how people live. 70:13 The full truth emerged gradually over the following days through neighborhood rumors and information contained in the police reports. 70:20 The Richardson family had relocated seven times during the previous three years. 70:25 Each move occurred after Emma became excessively interested in someone living nearby. 70:30 The detective assured me that Emma was not violent. He was simply obsessed with studying people and memorizing their patterns until he could predict every movement they would make. 70:40 The family kept their house dark to avoid attracting attention. They also attempted to keep Emma calm by eliminating as much external stimulation as possible. 70:50 I became his latest obsession the instant I began showing interest in the family's unusual behavior. 70:56 Investigators had found similar surveillance arrangements in towns where the Richardsons previously lived, hidden cameras, concealed vents, and extensive written records of their neighbors' activities. 71:08 On two earlier occasions, evidence suggested that Emma had secretly occupied crawl spaces or attics without the residents ever discovering him. 71:17 The detective described it as the most advanced surveillance system he had ever encountered from a 17-year-old. 71:24 He showed me photographs of Emma's notebooks, which contained observations such as, Subject orders Thai food when stressed, Tuesday, Thursday. 71:33 Checks window at 3.17pm every day after coffee break. 71:38 I could not remain in the house for one more night. I packed everything that would fit inside my car and stayed at a motel for three days while attempting to process what had occurred. 71:48 The violation extended far beyond someone physically entering my home. 71:53 This boy had documented my entire existence. 71:56 He knew when I cried after telephone conversations with my former partner. 72:01 He knew which mug I used for coffee and which one I preferred for tea. 72:05 He knew I sang badly along with music from the 1980s while doing laundry on Sundays. 72:11 The Richardsons disappeared before Emma's scheduled court appearance. 72:15 They abandoned the neighboring rental house, even though its rent had already been paid through the remainder of the month. 72:21 The prosecutor explained that this was the family's established pattern. They never remained for legal proceedings. They simply vanished and began again somewhere else. 72:32 I terminated my lease, accepted the financial loss, and moved across town into an apartment complex equipped with security cameras and a doorman. 72:41 For months afterward, I repeatedly searched my closets for concealed panels. 72:46 I ran my hands across the ceilings looking for tiny holes and wondered whether someone, somewhere, was documenting my new habits in another notebook. 72:55 Six months later, a letter was forwarded from my former address. There was no return address. Only my name appeared on the envelope, written in the same impossibly perfect handwriting as the message Emma had left on my desk. 73:09 Inside was one sheet of paper containing a single sentence. 73:13 You were the most interesting one. 73:15 I surrendered the letter to the police, but they explained that without a postmark or any other identifying information, there was nothing they could do. 73:24 Since then I have moved two additional times, changed jobs, and deleted most of my social media accounts. 73:31 Yet I occasionally awaken in the middle of the night convinced that I can hear the ceiling creaking above me, even though I now live on the top floor. 73:39 The detective called me last month. Authorities had arrested Emma in Michigan. 73:44 This time he had been living inside the walls of a family's home with 17 notebooks filled with observations. 73:50 When investigators asked why he continued doing it, Emma said he was practicing to become a writer. He claimed that the finest characters were inspired by real people, and he said that I had taught him more about fear than anyone else. 74:09 Story 6 The night everything fell apart was a Wednesday near the end of September 2016. 74:16 At the time, I taught sophomore English at Riverside High, one of those small town schools where everybody knew everybody else's personal affairs. 74:25 I had just finished grading an enormous stack of essays about The Great Gatsby, My wife, Laura, had sent me a message earlier asking me to purchase milk on my way home. 74:35 I remember feeling irritated because the closest grocery store closed at 9 o'clock and it was already after 11 o'clock. 74:43 The janitor, old Mr. Whitaker, had locked most of the building several hours earlier. 74:48 By then, the only things keeping me company were the flickering fluorescent lights in the teacher's lounge. 74:54 I had been working late for several weeks, trying to catch up after assuming responsibility for Mrs. Coleman's classes when she took medical leave. 75:02 My battered Ford pickup was the only vehicle remaining in the parking lot. Its engine coughed twice before finally starting, just as it had on every cold night throughout the previous three winters. 75:14 My road home followed County Road 74. 75:17 a narrow two-lane road that crossed approximately 15 miles of farmland and scattered forests before reaching the edge of town where I lived. 75:26 On most evenings I made the trip almost automatically, keeping the windows open and listening to whichever classic rock station had the clearest reception. But that particular night felt unusual from the moment I turned away from the main highway. There was a new moon and everything beyond the reach of my headlights was buried beneath the dense darkness found only in the countryside, the kind that seemed capable of swallowing sound itself. 75:51 Approximately six miles along the road, just beyond the former Garrett farm that had been sold to developers, my headlights illuminated something metallic on the shoulder. 76:01 As I approached, I recognized a sedan. It might have been a Toyota or a Honda, and its paint appeared either dark blue or black. 76:10 The darkness made it difficult to be certain. Its hazard lights flashed with an urgent amber rhythm. 76:16 The vehicle was positioned strangely. 76:19 It was not completely parallel with the highway, almost as though the driver had jerked the steering wheel and pulled off the pavement in a desperate hurry. 76:27 My initial impulse was to continue driving. Everyone has heard stories about staged breakdowns, people pretending to need assistance so they can rob the person kind enough to stop. 76:39 Then I thought about my daughter, Katie, who was away at college. 76:43 What if she became stranded somewhere and every driver passed without helping her? 76:47 That thought worked on my conscience for approximately 30 seconds before I reduced my speed and parked behind the sedan. 76:55 I left a distance of roughly 20 feet between our vehicles and kept my truck's engine running. 77:00 From beneath the seat I retrieved the heavy maglite Laura always mocked me for carrying, saying I acted as though I were a police officer. 77:08 Then I climbed out. 77:10 The silence struck me immediately. There was no traffic and no sound from crickets. 77:16 Even the wind had become completely still. 77:19 Hello? I called. 77:21 Is everything okay? 77:22 My voice seemed to disappear into the darkness surrounding me. The sedan's interior light was illuminated. Looking through the rear window, I could see that no one occupied the driver's seat. 77:33 Both front doors appeared closed, although the driver's door had not latched completely. 77:38 It looked as if someone had rushed out and failed to shut it firmly. 77:42 I advanced cautiously. Moving the mag lights beam across the tall grass on both sides of the highway while searching for the driver. 77:50 Perhaps the person had walked away to find cellular reception. 77:54 Maybe there had been a medical emergency and someone else had already taken them for help. 77:59 Once I was closer, I identified the vehicle as a 2014 Nissan Altima. Its license plate was local, one of those specialty plates decorated with an image of the Port Haven Lighthouse. 78:11 When I reached the driver's door, I illuminated the interior with my flashlight without touching the car. 78:17 That was when my chest began tightening. 78:20 A wallet lay open across the driver's seat, with the credit cards still secured inside their individual slots. 78:26 An iPhone rested face down on the passenger seat. Its display continued lighting up with notifications and missed calls. 78:34 A half-finished cup of coffee occupied the cup holder, and a trace of steam still rose from it. 78:40 The keys remained hanging from the ignition. The radio was playing a program about local politics, although the volume had been turned so low that the voices were barely audible. 78:51 I removed my phone to call 911, but the screen showed no reception. It was a dead zone, which was not uncommon along that portion of County Road 74. 79:01 The sensible thing would have been to drive until I regained service and then report the abandoned car. 79:07 Instead, something compelled me to circle the Altima first and search for signs of a collision or confrontation. 79:14 The grass beside the passenger side had been flattened in an unusual pattern. It did not look as though a person had merely walked through it. 79:22 It appeared that something heavy had been dragged across the ground. 79:26 The trail extended approximately 10 feet into the field before disappearing where the grass became taller. 79:33 I followed it with my flashlight. 79:35 Hey, I called again. Is anybody out there? I'm here to help. 79:40 The beam landed on a white object contrasting against the dark ground. 79:45 It was a woman's sneaker, probably a size 7 or 8, lying on its side with the laces still tied. 79:51 My mouth became dry. I picked it up and noticed a footprint preserved perfectly in the mud beside it, as though the woman had stepped directly out of the shoe while running. 80:02 The rational part of my mind continued insisting that there had to be an ordinary explanation. 80:07 Perhaps the driver had suffered a mental health episode, become confused and wandered into the field. 80:14 Maybe she was diabetic and became disoriented because her blood sugar had fallen dangerously low. 80:20 But the scene did not make sense. Why would she abandon her wallet and phone? Why was only one of her shoes there? 80:27 I returned to my truck, retrieved the emergency kit stored behind the seat, and went back to the Altma. 80:34 Using my sleeve to avoid leaving fingerprints, I carefully pulled the driver's door farther open. 80:40 According to the license, the wallet belonged to Melissa Vaughn. She was 32 years old and lived in Riverside Heights, approximately 40 minutes away. 80:49 Her photograph showed a tired but kind-looking face. She seemed like the kind of person who probably worked two different jobs and still volunteered at her children's school. 80:59 Several photographs were tucked behind the license. They showed two young boys wearing baseball uniforms, a golden retriever, and what appeared to be a family barbecue. They were ordinary glimpses of an ordinary life, and they made the knot in my stomach tighten even more. 81:16 The iPhone on the passenger seat continued illuminating with notifications. There were missed calls from a contact identified as Hub, along with messages asking where she was and saying that the children were waiting for dinner. 81:29 I knew I should not handle the phone, but I needed some way to contact help. 81:34 Leaning across the interior, I pressed the home button with my knuckle. The lock screen displayed 1147 p.m. and 17 missed calls. The newest message received only three minutes earlier read, Mel, I'm getting worried. Your location sharing shows that you stopped on County Road. Please call me. 81:54 That meant her husband could see the location of her vehicle. 81:58 I memorized his telephone number from the screen, intending to call him from my own phone once I reached an area with reception. 82:05 Then I heard something that caused every muscle in my body to tighten. An engine was approaching from somewhere in the distance. On an ordinary night, perhaps three vehicles traveled that road, and it was nearly midnight on a Wednesday. 82:18 I turned toward the noise and saw headlights approaching from the direction of town. 82:23 The vehicle was moving more slowly than normal, as though its occupants were searching for something. 82:29 It was a white panel van without any rear windows. creeping along at approximately 15 miles per hour. 82:36 When it came close enough for the driver to see my pickup and the Altima, it stopped completely in the center of the highway. 82:43 It remained there for what seemed like an eternity, although it was probably only 10 seconds. I lifted my hand and waved, attempting to appear friendly and unthreatening. 82:53 The van did not move. 82:55 The glare from its headlights prevented me from seeing through the windshield, but I had the unmistakable sensation that whoever sat inside was studying and evaluating me. 83:05 Without warning, the engine roared. 83:07 The van sped past both vehicles and accelerated so violently that its tires briefly squealed against the pavement. 83:15 I watched its taillights disappear around the next bend. That was when I noticed something that made my scalp prickle. 83:21 Fresh wet mud covered the van's rear doors. 83:25 It was the same dark clay as the soil surrounding the place where I had discovered Melissa's shoe. 83:30 My mind began forming connections I desperately did not want to make. 83:35 I decided I had seen enough. 83:37 Whatever had happened to Melissa Vaughn, I was not prepared to confront it alone on an isolated road in complete darkness. I hurried back to my pickup, locked the doors, and drove rapidly toward town. 83:49 Near the old water tower, my phone finally displayed two bars of reception. I pulled onto the shoulder and called 911. 83:57 I explained everything to the dispatcher. The abandoned sedan, the wallet and phone left inside, the sneaker in the field, and the suspicious white van. 84:07 She told me deputies were responding and instructed me to remain where I was so I could guide them back to the location. 84:14 While waiting, I called the number I had memorized from Melissa's phone. Her husband answered after the first ring. 84:21 Mel, he said, his voice already breaking. 84:24 I had to explain that I was not Melissa. 84:27 I told him I had found her car and that the police were on their way. 84:31 When I mentioned discovering her shoe, he made a noise that was not exactly a sob. It sounded more like all the air leaving his body at once. He repeatedly asked whether I had seen any blood. 84:42 I told him I had not, which was the truth. 84:45 Somehow, that answer did not seem to reassure either of us. 84:49 Two sheriff's deputies arrived approximately 20 minutes later, and I led them back along County Road 74. 84:56 Except when we reached the place where the Nissan Altima had been parked, the location I knew with absolute certainty, the car was gone. 85:04 There were no tire marks along the shoulder and no flattened grass where I had walked. 85:09 Even the sneaker I had foolishly left sitting on the hood of the Altima had vanished. 85:14 The deputies looked at me as if they suspected I was intoxicated or mentally unstable. 85:19 They moved their flashlights across the roadside while I repeatedly insisted that we were standing in the correct place. 85:26 I knew County Road 74 as well as I knew my own hand. We were just beyond the old Whitman property, and I could see the crooked fence post I had specifically noted as a landmark. 85:37 One deputy suggested that the darkness might have confused me, and that perhaps the car had been farther along the road. 85:44 But I knew this was the location. 85:47 The other deputy contacted dispatch to confirm that I had actually made the 911 call. While he spoke over the radio, his partner discovered something. 85:56 A single tire mark pressed into the soft shoulder. It was fresh and appeared to have been made by a heavy vehicle that had recently pulled off the road. 86:05 That was the only evidence remaining of anything I had described. The deputies recorded my statement, but I could tell they believed I had either imagined the entire event or was intentionally withholding part of the story. 86:18 They promised to contact the Vaughan family and investigate the license plate number I remembered. but their tone suggested that they were simply indulging me. 86:26 I drove home in a daze. 86:28 It was nearly two o'clock in the morning when I entered the house and found Laura asleep on the couch with the television still playing. 86:36 I did not awaken her. Instead, I sat at the kitchen table with a beer and attempted to understand what I had witnessed. 86:43 The following morning I called the school and reported that I was sick, something I almost never did. 86:49 In full daylight I returned to the location on County Road 74. The area looked entirely different beneath the sun. It was completely ordinary, nothing more than a section of pavement running between open fields. 87:03 I parked and searched through the grass where I had discovered the sneaker. 87:07 There was nothing there. Even the dragging marks I had seen so clearly the previous night had disappeared. 87:14 The earth looked untouched, almost as if someone had deliberately smoothed it. 87:18 I drove into town and visited the sheriff's office. The deputy behind the front desk informed me that there was no missing person report for anyone named Melissa Vaughan. There was no report involving an abandoned vehicle either. 87:31 The only incident recorded in the system from the previous night was my 911 call. 87:37 That evening, I could not prevent myself from driving to Riverside Heights and visiting the address printed on Melissa's license. The house existed. 87:45 It was a modest two-story residence with a weathered basketball hoop beside the driveway. 87:50 The same two boys from the photographs inside the wallet were playing in the front yard. 87:56 I knocked on the door and asked the woman who answered whether Melissa Vaughn lived there. 88:00 She stared at me without recognition and said that no one by that name had ever occupied the house. 88:06 She claimed she and her husband had rented the property for five years. 88:10 The two boys called her mom and she looked nothing like the woman shown on Melissa Vaughn's driver's license. 88:17 I apologized for the misunderstanding and walked toward my truck. 88:20 Before I reached it, one of the boys, perhaps eight years old, hurried over and pulled gently at my sleeve. 88:27 She told us not to talk about the woman who came yesterday and asked about our house, he whispered. Are you with her? 88:34 Before I could ask who that other woman was, His mother sharply ordered him to come inside. 88:39 Both boys disappeared behind the door and I heard the deadbolt slide into place. 88:44 That occurred three years ago. 88:46 I still follow County Road 74 when driving home, although I have never witnessed anything unusual there again. 88:53 But on certain dark nights, when I pass that exact section of the road, I find myself slowing down without consciously deciding to do it. 89:02 And I search the darkness for hazard lights that are no longer there. 89:11 Story 7 I remember that night perfectly because it was supposed to be uncomplicated, almost reassuring. 89:19 Our small town rarely organized major events, so residents genuinely looked forward to the annual fair. 89:26 I went there after finishing work and was still wearing my uniform. My only plans were to buy a funnel cake and wander beneath the strings of lights for a while. 89:35 I stayed for perhaps an hour before returning to my vehicle. 89:39 I had parked on a side street approximately one block from the main parking area where most visitors had gathered. 89:45 When I reached my car, something about the windshield looked unusual beneath the streetlight. 89:50 A sheet of paper had been folded once through the center and tucked beneath one of the windshield wipers. 89:56 I initially assumed it was a church pamphlet or a discount coupon advertising some local company. 90:02 I gave it little consideration until I entered the driver's seat, placed the paper on the passenger side and unfolded it. 90:09 It was not an advertisement. There was no company logo or decorative design, only a list written in precise square handwriting. 90:18 Every line contained a date followed by a time, with careful spaces between the entries, as though someone had copied the information from a personal planner. 90:27 At first I did not understand the connection. 90:30 I thought it might be a stranger's schedule that had somehow ended up beneath my windshield wiper by accident. 90:36 Then I recognized the exact shift I had worked two nights earlier, including the precise time I clocked out. 90:43 I quickly read the rest of the page. There were not merely one or two coincidences. 90:48 Every day of that week was listed, along with the exact hours when I arrived at and departed from work. 90:55 My chest tightened as the meeting became clear. The paper had not been placed there accidentally. 91:01 At the bottom of the page, written slightly larger than the other entries, was a short message See you soon. 91:09 In that instant, the fair's pleasant, carefree atmosphere became something rotten in my memory. 91:14 I had spent the evening moving through crowds, waiting in lines for food and passing between countless strangers. 91:21 At some point, a person who knew my schedule well enough to record it had approached my car and left that message. 91:27 The realization that someone had monitored me so carefully made me feel more exposed than I had ever felt before. 91:34 I remained behind the steering wheel with the engine turned off for at least a minute, reading the list repeatedly. 91:41 My first reaction was to examine the sidewalks around me. I searched the faces of people walking back from the fair. 91:48 None of them appeared to be looking toward me. Even so, I could not dismiss the possibility that the person who wrote the note was still nearby. close enough to observe my response. 91:59 The page felt unusually heavy between my fingers, as if it carried far more weight than paper and ink should possess. 92:06 I barely remember the drive home. 92:09 Every set of headlights behind me appeared to follow for too long, and I spent more time looking into the rearview mirror than watching the highway ahead. 92:17 The note remained on the passenger seat. 92:20 I could not force myself to throw it through the window or crush it into a ball. 92:25 One part of me wanted to preserve it as evidence in case I eventually needed to show it to someone. 92:30 Another part despised having it beside me. It felt like an open connection between me and the person who had written it. 92:37 When I reached my apartment, I went directly to my laptop and placed the paper beneath the desk lamp so I could study it again. 92:45 The handwriting was not untidy, but neither did it appear formal. 92:49 The letters were square and strangely consistent, as if the writer had worked slowly to ensure that every word was easy to read. 92:57 The dates appeared chronologically, and everyone corresponded perfectly with the times I entered and left work. 93:04 The list even included a shift I had exchanged with a coworker at the last possible moment. 93:09 That detail disturbed me more than anything else. Whoever recorded my movements had not relied on guesses. 93:16 They knew exactly where I had been, almost as if they had remained beside me every step of the way. 93:22 I considered contacting someone, perhaps my manager or even the police, but what could I tell them? 93:28 Someone had placed a piece of paper on my car proving they had followed me. 93:33 The complaint seemed insubstantial. 93:35 I imagined the authorities dismissing it unless something more serious occurred. 93:40 Nevertheless, the words, see you soon, continued circling through my thoughts like a warning I did not know how to answer. 93:48 Eventually, I placed the note inside a drawer. I barely slept that night. Every creak inside the walls and every vehicle pulling away outside made me wonder whether I had already been selected for whatever soon was supposed to mean. 94:03 The paranoia remained with me throughout the following day. I parked farther away from the store, carefully examined the area around my car before unlocking it, and asked a co-worker to accompany me to the parking lot after closing. 94:16 Nothing unusual happened, but I could not stop thinking about the note. By the time my shift ended, most of the parking lot was empty. 94:24 I forced myself to inspect every remaining vehicle, memorizing their shapes and license plates as though I might later be required to identify them. 94:32 On the third day, I finally carried the paper into the local police station. The officer at the desk read it twice. His expression tightened in small ways that he probably did not realize I could see. 94:45 He asked whether I had recently argued with anyone or whether someone might hold a grudge against me. I said no. 94:52 I also explained that the list included the shift I had traded at the last minute, which proved the writer was not simply making lucky guesses. 95:00 The officer accepted the note and said the department would keep it on file. However, I could tell they had no intention of beginning a formal investigation unless the situation became more serious. 95:11 For weeks, I waited for something else to happen. Every knock on my apartment door caused my muscles to tense. Every notification on my phone made me examine the screen twice. 95:22 I changed where I parked, followed different routes to work, and even stayed at my sister's home for several nights so I would not feel completely alone. 95:31 Nothing else ever happened. There were no additional notes, no mysterious telephone calls, and no unmistakable indication that someone was following me. 95:41 It was as though the person wanted me to know how close they had been and then disappeared once the fear had embedded itself deeply enough. 95:49 Even now I do not understand what they wanted. Perhaps the message was a threat. 95:54 Maybe it was only a cruel method of entering my mind and remaining there. Whatever the intention was, it succeeded. 96:02 I never attended the town fair again. 96:04 Every time I returned to my car, I still examined the windshield before opening the door. 96:09 That single sheet of paper permanently altered the way I moved through life. 96:14 It reminds me that someone somewhere had documented my entire routine without attracting my attention, and revealed themselves only when they decided to sign their work with the words, See you soon. 96:30 Story 8. 96:32 Moving into that small town felt like walking onto a stage where everyone except me had already memorized the script. 96:40 I had recently accepted a position at a modest accounting firm. The town appeared peaceful, predictable, and simple enough to adjust to. 96:49 My apartment was located above a bakery, filling the rooms with the aroma of freshly baked bread every morning. 96:55 Life moved at a much slower pace than anything I had previously experienced. Initially, that was comforting. 97:02 People waved when they passed me on the street. They asked where I had moved from and appeared sincerely interested in learning about me. But after only one week, an unusual pattern began finding its way into nearly every conversation. 97:16 The first incident occurred when I stopped at a small diner near my office to purchase a sandwich. 97:21 The waitress was an older woman with sharply defined cheekbones. Her hair had been pulled back so tightly that the style looked painful. 97:29 When I asked whether there were any interesting places nearby to explore, she leaned closer, chuckled, and said, Just don't go beyond the water tower after dark. 97:39 I responded with a polite laugh. I assumed it was some traditional warning delivered to newcomers as a joke, similar to telling strangers that whistling after sunset would summon ghosts. 97:51 I dismissed it. 97:52 Two days later, however, my landlord repeated the exact same words while repairing a leaking faucet in my kitchen. 97:59 By the end of my first month, I had heard the warning at least six times. Different people delivered it. 98:05 The grocery store cashier, a teenager working at the gas station, and even one of my colleagues. 98:12 Each person used almost identical words. 98:15 Don't go past the water tower after dark. 98:18 Some of them laughed as though they were participating in a private joke. 98:22 Others delivered the warning without the slightest hint of amusement. 98:26 The constant repetition disturbed me, although I tried to explain it as an example of small-town humor, perhaps an old local reference that no one had explained to me yet. 98:37 Still, I could not escape the feeling that the residents were testing me. 98:41 It seemed as though the entire town wanted to observe how I would respond. 98:45 Eventually, my curiosity overcame my caution. 98:48 One evening, shortly before sunset, I walked toward the water tower. The structure stood at the town's outer edge. 98:56 Rust formed long streaks down its sides, and dry weeds surrounded its metal framework. 99:01 A chain-link fence enclosed the property, although holes in several sections had been poorly repaired with twisted pieces of wire. 99:08 I remained there for several minutes, waiting for anything unusual to occur. 99:13 The silence seemed to press against me. 99:15 Only the faraway drone of cicadas interrupted it. 99:19 Nothing strange happened that evening, but as I returned through town every person who passed seemed to glance at me as though I had crossed a boundary that could not be seen. 99:29 Their looks caused an uneasy prickling sensation across my skin. 99:33 Several nights later I decided to question one of my co-workers. 99:37 His name was Mark. 99:39 He was a reserved man who rarely participated in conversations around the office, although he almost always remained at work late. 99:47 While we were leaving together, I casually mentioned the tower and joked about how everyone in town seemed to repeat the same warning. 99:54 For the first time since I had met him, Mark stopped walking in the middle of a step. He neither smiled nor laughed. 100:01 Certain things are better left alone, he said. 100:05 Then he walked toward his truck without offering another word. 100:08 His response remained lodged in my thoughts, repeating itself whenever I passed the water tower during my commute. 100:16 My curiosity transformed into something more burdensome. It was no longer simple interest. 100:22 It became a persistent need to understand what everyone was hiding. 100:26 One Saturday I visited the small public library in the center of town. The building smelled of dust and aging carpet. It was the sort of place where time itself seemed thicker. 100:37 I searched through archived newspapers, turning pages from local sections filled with little more than bake sales and high school football results. 100:46 There was nothing about the water tower, not even a brief reference. 100:50 Then, inside a box marked miscellaneous, I discovered photocopies of police incident summaries. 100:56 The unusual detail was that none of them contained official stamps or case numbers. 101:01 The documents described people who had disappeared near the old water tower over a period spanning almost three decades. 101:08 Some were local residents, others were drifters, one was a traveling salesman. 101:14 The language in each account was disturbingly similar, as if whoever prepared the reports had copied the wording from a standard template. 101:22 Several pages contained handwritten notes in their margins. 101:26 Family insists last seen near tower. 101:29 Patrol car reported lights near structure. 101:33 Everything appeared informal. The comments looked like hastily written reminders instead of legitimate police documentation. 101:40 My pulse accelerated as I realized that these disappearances had never been entered as official cases. 101:47 It felt as though I had accidentally uncovered information that I was never supposed to see. 101:52 When I left the library that evening, the town no longer looked the same. The streets seemed emptier than usual. 101:59 I also noticed how the water tower was visible from nearly every direction, looming above the rooftops as though it had been waiting for me to acknowledge its presence. 102:08 I drove home with my windows closed, glancing toward the structure every time it appeared against the horizon. 102:14 I could not sleep that night. Every creak inside my apartment sounded louder than normal. Whenever headlights passed across my window blinds, I expected the vehicle to stop and park outside. 102:27 The warning continued repeating inside my thoughts. But it no longer sounded like a joke. 102:33 It sounded like a genuine attempt to keep me alive. 102:36 The following evening, I drove toward the water tower again. This time, I went after nightfall. The road leading to it was barely illuminated. Weeds consumed the edges of the cracked asphalt. When I parked near the fence, the atmosphere felt heavier, as though the stillness itself possessed physical weight. 102:55 I switched off the engine and remained inside the car for approximately a minute. 103:00 The tower's metal framework creaked faintly in the night air. 103:03 I thought about the unofficial reports and all the people who had approached this place but never returned. My instincts ordered me to leave. 103:11 Yet something deeper insisted that I had already traveled too far to simply turn around without answers. 103:17 As I approached the fence, I noticed faint markings carved into its metal posts. There were initials, dates, and crudely scratched symbols. Some appeared recent, while Rust had nearly erased others. 103:29 I placed one hand against the cold wire. 103:32 For a fraction of a second I could have sworn that I heard movement on the opposite side of the tower. 103:38 It sounded like footsteps crossing gravel. 103:41 The lot appeared deserted. When I directed my flashlight toward the sound, its beam revealed nothing except weeds and bare dirt. 103:49 Even after the noise stopped, it continued echoing inside my ears. 103:54 I returned home frightened but determined to end my obsession. 103:57 The following day, I visited the sheriff's office and pretended that I wanted general information about safety in the surrounding neighborhoods. 104:05 The deputy behind the front desk was a tired-looking man with a heavy mustache. 104:10 When I casually mentioned the water tower, he studied me for a long moment. Then he leaned toward me and lowered his voice. 104:17 If you intend to keep your job in this town, don't investigate matters that have nothing to do with you. 104:23 He pushed a stack of unrelated informational brochures across the desk and walked away. 104:28 That was the only response I ever received from law enforcement in that town. 104:33 Afterward, I stopped asking questions. I never returned to the water tower. I refused even to drive near it again. 104:41 People continued repeating the same supposed joke. 104:44 Don't go past the water tower after dark. I learned to smile and nod as though the words did not disturb me. 104:51 Internally, however, I continued carrying the burden of those unofficial reports and the silence surrounding them. 104:58 I still do not know whether the warnings were based on superstition, some local ritual, or something far more sinister. 105:05 But I know one thing. 105:07 I listened. 105:09 And perhaps that is the reason I am still alive to tell this story.
